Engineering Tips

Computes the resultant thrust a pressurised, flowing line exerts at a change of direction — the load an anchor or thrust block must react.

Force balance:

• F_p = P·A — static pressure force

• F_m = ρ·A·v² — momentum force

• R = 2·(F_p + F_m)·sin(θ/2) at the bend

Recommended values

Pressure: Use the design/maximum operating pressure for a conservative restraint load.
Flow: Use the maximum flow — the momentum term scales with velocity squared.
Bend angle: 90° standard elbow, 45° lateral, 180° return. θ is the deflection (turn) angle.

Limitations

Steady state: Momentum + pressure thrust only — add surge / water-hammer thrust separately where it governs.
Screening: A restraint-load screen, not a modelled pipe-stress / support design.
