Calculates exact ring weights for the pipe, insulation and cladding, adds the filled bore, and converts the governing line weight into the load carried by one support.
w = ρ·π/4·(OD² − ID²)
F = w_gov·g·L·k + P · F_rod = F / n
L_allow = min(stress, deflection)
Fixed units (SI):
OD, t mm · ρ kg/m³ · span m · weight kg/m · load kN · point load N
Rod sizing uses tabulated carbon-steel threaded-rod safe loads at ≤650 °F. Span check is an MSS SP-69 screening (stress + deflection). Confirm the governing editions, temperature, load combinations and project factors.
Recommended values
- Support loads: Add pipe + contents + insulation + valve/flange weights for hanger and structure design.
- Test weight governs: Water-filled (hydrotest) weight is usually the worst case for supports — size to it.
- Trapeze / rods: Check rod allowable load and trapeze beam span against the total distributed weight.
- Insulation: Include jacket + insulation density; on large cold lines this is a big share of the load.
Limitations
- Weight only: Gives weight per unit length and point loads — not the support reaction distribution.
- Not included: Dynamic amplification (slug, seismic) and thermal support loads are separate checks.
