Covers — heavy-duty bolted-bonnet steel gate valves (flanged and butt-welding ends) for petroleum refinery and related applications where corrosion, erosion, and severe service demand full-port openings, heavy walls, and large stems. Includes design, materials, trim, and testing.
Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:
- Compact / small-bore forged gate, globe, and check valves → API 602.
- Thinner-wall corrosion-resistant bolted-bonnet gate valves → API 603.
- Ratings/wall thickness basis → ASME B16.34; face-to-face → ASME B16.10; testing → API 598.
API 600 is the heavy-duty refinery gate-valve standard; API 602/603 cover the compact and CR alternatives.
Key Requirements
API 600 sets minimum requirements for heavy-duty steel gate valves:
- Materials — steel body/bonnet materials rated to B16.34 with specified trim combinations.
- Design — bolted bonnet, back seat, full-port waterway, heavy wall, and stem sizing for the duty.
- Examination & Testing — shell and seat testing per API 598; NDE as specified.
- Marking — per MSS SP-25 with rating, material, and manufacturer identification.
Technical Details
API 600 specifies heavy-duty bolted-bonnet steel gate valves for refinery and process service — the default for full-size isolation where robustness matters. It calls for full-port openings, heavy wall sections, and large stems to survive corrosion, erosion, and cycling.
Ratings and minimum wall thickness build on ASME B16.34, face-to-face on B16.10, and testing on API 598. Compact valves (API 602) and corrosion-resistant thinner-wall valves (API 603) cover the adjacent needs.
Engineering Note: Gate valves are for full-open/full-closed isolation, not throttling — partial opening causes seat erosion and vibration.
