Overview
API 6A is the primary standard for wellhead and christmas tree equipment used in upstream oil and gas production. It includes specifications for extremely high-pressure flanges (up to 20,000 psi) designed to contain subterranean reservoir pressures at the wellbore.
Scope & Applicability

Covers — upstream high-pressure flanges:
- Type 6B flanges (rated for 2,000 to 5,000 psi).
- Type 6BX flanges (rated for 2,000 to 20,000 psi, engineered for compact high-pressure sealing).
- Requires metallic Ring-Type Joint (RTJ) gaskets exclusively.
Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:
- Midstream and downstream process piping flanges → ASME B16.5.
Key Requirements
API 6A is vastly more stringent than ASME B16.5 due to blowout risks:
- Material Classes — categorizes materials based on the produced fluid (e.g., AA for general, FF for sour gas/H2S).
- Temperature Classes — rates flanges from -75°F to 650°F (-60°C to 345°C).
- Product Specification Levels (PSL) — defines quality control requirements (PSL 1 to 4) ranging from standard to extreme testing for critical sour wells.
Technical Details
API 6A flanges are not interchangeable with ASME B16.5 flanges, even though some dimensions (like bolt circles for certain 6B flanges) may appear identical to ASME Class 600 or 900. API 6A flanges use a proprietary face geometry specifically designed to trap and crush metallic ring gaskets under immense pressure.
Engineering Notes
The boundary between the wellhead (API 6A) and the pipeline/process facility (ASME B31.3 / B16.5) requires a specialized transition piece known as a crossover flange or adapter spool, which has an API flange on one end and an ASME flange on the other.
