Overview

ASME B16.24 specifies requirements for cast copper alloy (brass and bronze) flanges. These are used primarily in marine environments, seawater cooling systems, and specialized oxygen or potable water services where corrosion resistance and non-sparking properties are required.

2

Scope & Applicability

Applies To Industries

MarineWaterworksGeneral Industry

Covers — cast copper alloy flanges:

  • Sizes from NPS 1/2 to NPS 12.
  • Pressure classes: 150 and 300.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Steel flanges → ASME B16.5.
3

Key Requirements

Like cast iron, cast copper alloys have specific bolting restrictions to prevent damage to the softer flange material. The drilling template (bolt circle) matches ASME B16.5 to allow interfacing with steel systems.

4

Technical Details

B16.24 provides the standards for components critical in shipbuilding and coastal desalination plants, ensuring compatibility with standard steel piping infrastructure.

5

Engineering Notes

When bolting copper alloy flanges to steel flanges in seawater service, galvanic corrosion can rapidly destroy the steel flange. Insulating flange kits (gasket, sleeves, and washers) are mandatory to break the electrical connection.
