Overview
ASME B16.9 standardizes factory-made wrought buttwelding fittings such as elbows, tees, reducers, caps, and returns. It establishes the overall dimensions, tolerances, testing requirements, and marking systems for these components to ensure proper fit-up and structural integrity with connecting pipes in high-pressure process piping systems.

- Sizes from NPS 1/2 through NPS 48.
- Fittings: 90° and 45° Long Radius (LR) Elbows, 3D Elbows, Straight and Reducing Tees, Concentric and Eccentric Reducers, Caps, and 180° Returns.
- Crosses (straight and reducing) and lap-joint stub ends.
Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:
- Short radius (1D) elbows and returns → ASME B16.28.
- Forged socket-welding and threaded fittings → ASME B16.11.
- Specific buttweld end preparations (bevel angles) → ASME B16.25.
- Integrally reinforced branch connection fittings (Olets) → MSS SP-97.
- Low-pressure lightweight stainless fittings → MSS SP-43.
Key Requirements
B16.9 focuses on layout geometry and proof testing rather than prescriptive wall thickness:
- Laying Dimensions — For a 90° LR elbow, the center-to-face dimension is exactly 1.5 times the Nominal Pipe Size (1.5D). For 45° elbows, it is approximately 0.625D. Tee dimensions are standardized as center-to-run and center-to-branch.
- Proof Testing (Burst Test) — The most critical concept in B16.9 is that fitting wall thickness is not explicitly tabulated (except for the weld ends which must match the pipe). Instead, the manufacturer must mathematically or physically prove that the fitting's bursting strength equals or exceeds the computed bursting strength of a straight, seamless pipe of the designated schedule and material.
- Tolerances — Establishes strict limits on out-of-roundness, off-angle (angularity), and off-plane alignments to ensure piping spools can be fabricated accurately in the shop.
- Material — Fittings must conform to ASTM wrought material specs (e.g., A234 WPB for carbon steel, A403 WP304L for stainless steel).
Technical Details
ASME B16.9 is the foundational fitting standard in process piping. Whenever a pipe changes direction (elbow), branches off (tee), or changes size (reducer), a B16.9 fitting is utilized.
Because the standard dictates that a fitting must be at least as strong as the connecting pipe, piping stress engineers do not need to calculate the pressure rating of individual B16.9 fittings. If the straight pipe (e.g., NPS 10 Sch 40 A106 Gr. B) is sufficient for the process pressure according to ASME B31.3, the matching B16.9 fitting (NPS 10 Sch 40 A234 WPB) is automatically approved for the same service.
It is important to note that the physical thickness of the fitting body (especially at the intrados of an elbow or the crotch of a tee) will actually be thicker than the pipe schedule to compensate for stress intensification in those geometries. The thickness only transitions down to match the pipe schedule right at the bevel ends.
Engineering Notes
While B16.9 governs the overall shape and dimensions of the fitting, the exact angle and geometry of the weld bevel at the ends of the fitting is governed entirely by ASME B16.25. Additionally, eccentric reducers are specified by placing the flat side on the bottom (FOB) or flat side on the top (FOT) to prevent liquid pooling or gas pocketing, respectively.
