Covers — technical repair methods for in-service pressure equipment and piping, organized as articles: welded repairs (weld build-up/overlay, sleeves, fillet-welded patches), mechanical repairs (bolted clamps, flange work), and nonmetallic/composite repairs, each with design, installation, and examination requirements.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Whether/when to repair and the in-service inspection program → API 570 / API 510.
  • Fitness-for-service assessment of the flaw → API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1.
  • Post-construction jurisdictional repair authorization (R-stamp) → NBIC.

PCC-2 supplies qualified repair techniques; the inspection code and FFS decide if and how the repair is justified.

Key Requirements

PCC-2 provides qualified repair methods organized by article:

  • Welded Repairs — weld overlay/build-up, full-encirclement and fillet-welded sleeves, with weld procedure and PWHT considerations.
  • Mechanical Repairs — bolted clamps and mechanical assemblies for leak sealing/reinforcement.
  • Nonmetallic Repairs — composite (fiber-reinforced) wrap systems with design and qualification.
  • Examination & Testing — NDE and pressure/leak testing appropriate to each repair method.

Technical Details

ASME PCC-2 is a toolbox of qualified repair methods for in-service pressure equipment and piping — welded (overlays, sleeves, patches), mechanical (clamps, bolted assemblies), and nonmetallic (composite wraps). Each method is a self-contained article with its own design, installation, and examination requirements.

It answers "how to repair," not "whether to repair": that decision, and the remaining-life justification, come from the inspection code (API 570/510) and fitness-for-service (API 579-1). Post-construction jurisdictional authorization (the R-stamp) is handled by the NBIC.

Engineering Note: Select the PCC-2 method to match the damage and service — a composite wrap can restore a corroded straight run without hot work, but leak-through defects, cracks, or high-consequence service may demand a welded or full-encirclement repair with proper NDE.
