Covers — carbon-steel castings suitable for fusion welding for high-temperature service, grades WCA, WCB, and WCC, used for valve bodies, pump casings, and pressure-containing parts.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Low-temperature (impact-tested) carbon-steel castings → ASTM A352 (LCB/LCC).
  • Alloy/stainless castings → ASTM A217 / A351.
  • Forged (not cast) carbon steel → ASTM A105.
  • Valve pressure-temperature rating and wall thickness → ASME B16.34.

WCB is the cast analog of forged A105 — same ambient-to-hot scope, no cold-service impact testing.

Key Requirements

A216 sets minimum requirements for the casting:

  • Chemistry — carbon-steel composition and carbon-equivalent limits for weldability.
  • Mechanical Properties — grade tensile/yield/elongation (WCB and WCC differ in strength).
  • Heat Treatment — annealed, normalized, or normalized-and-tempered.
  • Testing — tension testing and, per referencing code, radiographic/liquid-penetrant/magnetic-particle examination of the casting.

Technical Details

ASTM A216 is the standard carbon-steel casting spec for valve bodies and other pressure parts in high-temperature service, with grade WCB the industry default and WCC a higher-strength option. It defines the weldable chemistry, mechanical properties, and heat treatment.

As the cast counterpart of forged A105, WCB shares the same limitation on the cold end — for low-temperature service the impact-tested A352 grades apply. The valve's rating and wall thickness come from ASME B16.34.

Engineering Note: "WCB" on a valve datasheet is fine for ambient-to-hot service, but confirm the minimum design temperature — cold service requires A352 LCB/LCC castings.

Engineering Notes

WCB is the default carbon-steel valve-body casting — the cast counterpart of A105. Like A105 it has no low-temperature impact requirement, so for cold service the impact-tested casting grade (e.g., ASTM A352 LCB/LCC) is used instead. WCC is a higher-strength variant of WCB.
