Covers — nickel and nickel-alloy forgings for piping components: e.g., Alloy 400 (Monel, N04400), Alloy 625/825 (Inconel), Alloy C-276 (Hastelloy), Alloy 20 (N08020), used for flanges, forged fittings, and valve parts in severe service.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Nickel-alloy plate/sheet → ASTM B443/B575; nickel-alloy fittings → ASTM B366; nickel-alloy pipe → ASTM B444/B622.
  • Stainless (Fe-base) forgings → ASTM A182.
  • Component dimensions/ratings → ASME B16.5 / B16.9.

B564 covers many distinct alloys under one spec — the UNS number, not just "nickel alloy," identifies the material.

Key Requirements

B564 sets minimum requirements per nickel alloy:

  • Chemistry — composition limits for each UNS alloy (Monel, Inconel, Hastelloy, Alloy 20, etc.).
  • Mechanical Properties — alloy-specific tensile/yield/elongation and hardness.
  • Heat Treatment — annealing/solution treatment appropriate to the alloy for corrosion resistance.
  • Testing & Certification — tension testing, corrosion testing where specified, and mandatory PMI/heat certification.

Technical Details

ASTM B564 covers nickel and nickel-alloy forgings for the most severe corrosive and high-temperature piping components — flanges, fittings, and valve parts in Monel, Inconel, Hastelloy, and Alloy 20. It brings many distinct high-alloy grades under one specification, each keyed to a UNS number and a specific corrosion challenge.

Because these alloys look alike and cost far more than steel, correct alloy selection and rigorous positive material identification (PMI) are essential to avoid dangerous and expensive mix-ups. Component dimensions come from the B16 standards.

Engineering Note: Always require PMI on B564 components — a Monel-for-Inconel or 316-for-Alloy 20 substitution can pass visually yet fail rapidly in the intended corrodant.
