Covers — the lifecycle of submarine pipeline systems on a limit-state (LRFD) basis: concept, structural design (pressure containment, collapse, buckling), materials and corrosion control, offshore installation, operation, and abandonment, organized by safety class.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Onshore/general pipeline transportation → ISO 13623 / ASME B31.4 / B31.8.
  • Specialist offshore assessments (free spans, stability, buckling, integrity) → DNV-RP-F105/F109/F110/F116.
  • Line-pipe material → API 5L / DNV material specs.

DNV-ST-F101 is the subsea design basis; its DNV RP suite handles the specialist offshore analyses.

Technical Details

DNV-ST-F101 is the leading standard for submarine pipeline systems, built on a limit-state (LRFD) design philosophy with explicit safety classes — a fundamentally different framework from the allowable-stress ASME B31 codes. It covers the full offshore lifecycle: pressure containment, local and propagating buckling, collapse, fatigue, materials, corrosion protection, installation, and operation.

It anchors a suite of DNV recommended practices for specialist offshore analyses — free spans (F105), on-bottom stability (F109), global buckling (F110), and integrity management (F116). On subsea projects it is frequently the mandated design basis.

Engineering Note: Do not mix ASME allowable-stress checks with DNV limit-state utilizations on the same subsea design — the safety philosophies and load/resistance factors are different, and combining them produces inconsistent, indefensible margins.
