Covers — corrugated metal hoses and hose assemblies (with braid and end fittings) for flexible pipework: design, materials, manufacture, performance/testing, and installation guidance for vibration isolation, misalignment, and movement absorption.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Metal bellows expansion joints (in-line) → EJMA standards.
  • Rubber/elastomer expansion joints and hoses → other standards.
  • The connecting piping design → the applicable B31 code.

ISO 10380 covers flexible metal hose assemblies; in-line bellows expansion joints follow EJMA.

Key Requirements

ISO 10380 sets minimum requirements for metal hose assemblies:

  • Construction — corrugated hose (annular/helical) with braid and end fittings.
  • Performance — pressure rating, movement/flex-life capability, and burst.
  • Testing — pressure, leak, and (as applicable) fatigue/flex testing.
  • Installation — bend radius, avoidance of torsion, and correct movement geometry.

Technical Details

ISO 10380 governs corrugated metal hoses and hose assemblies — the flexible connectors used to absorb vibration, accommodate misalignment, and take up movement at pump, compressor, and equipment connections. A metal braid over the corrugations carries the pressure end-load and limits elongation.

Correct application is everything: the hose must be sized for pressure, temperature, and the actual movement, installed within its bend radius, and never subjected to torsion. Most premature metal-hose failures come from misapplication — torsion or over-bending fatiguing the corrugations. In-line bellows expansion joints instead follow EJMA.

Engineering Note: Never install a metal hose in torsion or below its minimum bend radius — flexible hoses absorb offset and axial/lateral movement, but twisting or tight bends rapidly fatigue the convolutions and cause early failure.
