Overview
Digital radiographic testing using computed radiography and digital detector arrays for welded joints.
Scope & Applicability
Applies To Industries
Applies to: Computed radiography (CR/IP) and digital detector array (DDA/flat panel) testing of fusion-welded joints; system classes A and B for DDA, class C for CR; applicable where real-time imaging or archival-quality digital records are required.
Does NOT cover: Film radiographic techniques (use ISO 17636-1); TOFD or phased-array UT (refer to ISO 10863 and ISO 13588); acceptance criteria (refer to applicable construction code).
Key Requirements
- Detector characterization per IEC 62083 (DDA) or ISO 16371 (CR)
- Basic spatial resolution (SRb) verification for each system class
- Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) minimum per class and technique
- Geometric unsharpness limits maintained as in film RT
- Image archiving: lossless format, minimum 10-year retention
- Qualified procedure document for each DDA/CR system
Technical Details
ISO 17636-2 enables the transition from film to digital radiography in weld inspection. DDA systems offer real-time imaging and superior dynamic range compared to film; CR systems provide portability comparable to film with digital workflow benefits. Both eliminate wet film processing and enable immediate image review on site.
Engineering note: Digital RT adoption requires upfront investment in detector qualification and procedure qualification documents, but delivers significant productivity gains for large fabrication scopes. Engineers should verify that the project ITP and client specifications explicitly permit ISO 17636-2 digital methods. Storage and cybersecurity requirements for long-term digital radiograph archives must be addressed in the QA plan.
Engineering Notes
Use the product form, grade, class, test method, and acceptance criteria specified by the governing construction code and purchase specification.
