Does NOT cover / superseded by — current guidance lives elsewhere:
- Current consolidated support/bracing standard → MSS SP-58 (2018) (successor).
- Seismic design forces and demand → the building/seismic code (ASCE 7 / IBC).
- Gravity support components and spacing → SP-58 support Types.
SP-127 bracing content is now in SP-58; the seismic demand still comes from the building code.

- Application — how to apply sway and seismic bracing to piping runs and branches.
- Coordination — bracing works with (not instead of) gravity supports; demand comes from the seismic code.
- Current Basis — consolidated into MSS SP-58 (2018).
Technical Details
MSS SP-127 addressed bracing for piping systems — the components and application methods that restrain pipe against seismic and lateral sway loads. It has been consolidated into MSS SP-58 (2018).
SP-127 covers the bracing hardware and how to apply it, but the seismic design demand — the forces the bracing must resist — comes from the building/seismic code such as ASCE 7. Bracing complements gravity supports rather than replacing them; both are often required on the same line.
Engineering Note: Keep seismic bracing and gravity support separate in the design — a gravity hanger is not a seismic brace, and adding bracing without the ASCE 7 demand analysis can under- or over-restrain the pipe.
