Overview
Bronze gate, globe, angle, and check valves for low-pressure service.
Scope & Applicability
Applies To Industries
Covers — bronze gate, globe, angle, and check valves for general-purpose and building-service applications, with pressure-temperature ratings, materials, end connections (threaded, solder, flanged), dimensions, marking, and testing.
Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:
- Cast iron globe/angle valves → MSS SP-85.
- Steel valves for process/petroleum service → API 600 / 602 / 608.
- High-pressure or high-temperature hydrocarbon service → steel/alloy valve standards to ASME B16.34.
Bronze SP-80 valves suit water, air, and low-pressure utility service, not severe process duty.
Key Requirements
SP-80 sets minimum requirements for bronze valves:
- Materials — bronze body/bonnet alloys (e.g., ASTM B62/B584) with defined trim.
- Design & Ratings — pressure-temperature ratings by class; standardized dimensions and end connections.
- Testing & Marking — shell and seat testing with acceptance leakage, plus marking per MSS SP-25.
Technical Details
MSS SP-80 is the go-to standard for small bronze gate, globe, angle, and check valves in water, air, and building-service systems. In one document it fixes the pressure-temperature ratings, bronze materials, end connections, dimensions, and testing, so a plumbing or utility valve is fully specified.
It is deliberately scoped to lower-pressure, non-severe service. For hydrocarbon process duty, steel valve standards (API 600/602/608) rated to B16.34 are used instead.
Engineering Note: Watch the temperature derating on bronze — its allowable pressure falls off faster with temperature than steel, so confirm the rating at the actual service temperature.
Engineering Notes
Small bronze valves for utility, plumbing, and building-service use, typically Class 125/150/200/300. It defines P-T ratings, materials, end connections, and testing in one document. Not intended for severe hydrocarbon process service — for that, use steel valve standards (API 600/602/608).
