Overview

Fabrication and installation practices for pipe hangers and supports; content now incorporated into MSS SP-58.

2

Scope & Applicability

Applies To Industries

General IndustryPower PlantPetrochemical

Covers — (historical, now in SP-58) fabrication and installation practices for pipe hangers and supports: welding of pipe attachments, spring-hanger setting, rod adjustment, and load transfer.

Does NOT cover / superseded by — current guidance lives elsewhere:

  • Current consolidated support standard → MSS SP-58 (2018) (successor).
  • Welding qualification for attachments on pressure piping → ASME Section IX + the piping code.
  • Structural steel welding → AWS D1.1.

SP-89 is consolidated into SP-58 — reference SP-58 for current fabrication/installation practice.

3

Key Requirements

SP-89 provided installation guidance (now within SP-58):

  • Attachment Fabrication — welded and clamped attachment practices to the pipe.
  • Spring-Hanger Setting — cold-load setting and travel adjustment for variable/constant springs.
  • Adjustment & Load Transfer — rod take-up and verifying load is carried after commissioning.
  • Current Basis — consolidated into MSS SP-58 (2018).

Technical Details

MSS SP-89 covered the fabrication and installation side of pipe supports — welding of attachments, spring-hanger cold-load setting, rod adjustment, and load transfer — complementing the design/selection focus of SP-58/SP-69. It has been consolidated into MSS SP-58 (2018).

Installation quality is decisive: a support system designed correctly can still fail in service if spring hangers are set to the wrong cold load or attachments are welded without qualified procedures on pressure piping.

Engineering Note: Verify spring-hanger cold-load settings and travel stops are removed at commissioning — an unreleased travel stop or wrong cold setting transfers unintended loads into the pipe and equipment nozzles.

Engineering Notes

The installation-side companion to SP-58/SP-69, covering how supports are fabricated and installed (welding of attachments, adjustment, load transfer). It has been consolidated into MSS SP-58 (2018). Good installation practice matters as much as component selection — a correctly specified spring hanger set to the wrong cold load, or a welded attachment on a high-temperature line without proper procedure, defeats the design.
