MSS SP-90

Covers — (historical, now in SP-58) standard terminology and definitions for pipe hangers and supports and their components.

SP-90 terminology is now part of SP-58 — cite SP-58 for the current definitions.

SP-90 provided terminology guidance (now within SP-58):

• Definitions — consistent names for support components and functions.
• Type Nomenclature — supporting the numbered "Type" system used across MSS support documents.
• Current Basis — consolidated into MSS SP-58 (2018).

MSS SP-90 standardized the terminology for pipe hangers and supports — a shared vocabulary for clamps, clevises, shoes, spring hangers, and the numbered component "Types." It has been consolidated into MSS SP-58 (2018).

Though modest in scope, consistent terminology is quietly important: it prevents ordering the wrong part or misreading a support isometric when design, fabrication, and field crews use different names for the same component.

Engineering Note: Use the SP-58 (formerly SP-90) component "Type" names and numbers on drawings and bills of material — free-text descriptions invite the wrong support being fabricated or installed.
