Covers — health-care facility systems, with emphasis (for piping) on medical-gas and vacuum piping: gas systems (oxygen, medical air, N2O, vacuum, WAGD), materials and brazing, source equipment and alarms, system category by risk, and independent verification/testing before use.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — general building services piping → ASME B31.9; fuel gas → NFPA 54; the medical-gas equipment/appliances themselves → device standards.

NFPA 99 governs medical-gas/vacuum piping and its verification; general building piping follows B31.9.

NFPA 99 sets requirements for medical-gas/vacuum piping:

  • Materials & Brazing — cleaned-for-oxygen copper tube and brazed joints under inert-gas purge.
  • System Category — risk-based category (1–4) driving stringency.
  • Source & Alarms — gas sources, manifolds, and area/master alarms.
  • Verification & Testing — independent verification (cross-connection, purity, particulate) before patient use.

Technical Details

NFPA 99 is the health-care facilities code; for piping engineers its critical content is medical-gas and vacuum piping — oxygen, medical air, nitrous oxide, medical vacuum, and waste anesthetic-gas disposal. It mandates cleaned-for-oxygen copper tube, brazing under inert purge, risk-based system categories, source equipment and alarms, and stringent independent verification and testing before any system delivers gas to patients.

Because a mislabeled or cross-connected medical gas is directly life-threatening, the verification step — checking for cross-connections, purity, and particulates — is as important as the installation itself.

Engineering Note: Never place a medical-gas system in service without the independent third-party verification — a cross-connection (e.g., air where oxygen is expected) that passes a simple pressure test can be fatal, which is exactly what the NFPA 99 verification is designed to catch.
