Covers — the fire test procedure and acceptance criteria for quarter-turn valves and valves equipped with nonmetallic (soft) seats, evaluating external/through-seat leakage and operability during and after a controlled fire exposure.
Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:
- Pipeline/API 6A-lineage fire testing → API 6FA.
- Routine (non-fire) shell/seat testing → API 598 / MSS SP-61.
- The valve design and ratings themselves → API 608/609 to ASME B16.34.
"Fire-safe" is meaningful only as certification to API 607 or API 6FA — treat it as a test result, not a feature.
Key Requirements
API 607 sets minimum requirements for the fire test:
- Test Setup — the valve is pressurized and exposed to a calibrated fire for a defined period.
- Acceptance — external and through-seat leakage during and after burn must stay within limits, and the valve must still operate.
- Certification — passing valves are qualified "fire-tested/fire-safe" for that size/class/design family.
Technical Details
API 607 is the fire test for quarter-turn and soft-seated valves. It exposes a pressurized valve to a controlled fire and checks that leakage stays within limits and the valve still operates — verifying that a secondary metal seat maintains isolation after the nonmetallic seat burns away.
It is the widely used fire-safe qualification for ball and butterfly valves; API 6FA is the parallel pipeline-lineage fire test. Fire-safe status must be evidenced by a certificate, not assumed from a design.
Engineering Note: On fire-exposed hydrocarbon isolation, require documented API 607 (or 6FA) certification for the exact size and pressure class in use.
