Covers — design and construction of glass-fiber-reinforced thermosetting-resin (FRP/GRP) pressure piping systems in the ASME framework, including manufacturing, joining, quality, and testing.
Does NOT cover (exclusions) — thermoplastic piping → ASME NM.1; nonmetallic material data → ASME NM.3; oil-and-gas GRP → ISO 14692; metallic piping → ASME B31.3.
NM.2 is the ASME FRP-piping code; ISO 14692 is the parallel oil-and-gas GRP standard.
Key Requirements
NM.2 sets minimum requirements for FRP piping:
- Materials — resin/glass laminate with design values from NM.3.
- Design — pressure and stress design accounting for FRP anisotropy and long-term behavior.
- Manufacturing & Joining — filament winding/hand lay-up and bonded/laminated joints.
- Quality & Testing — qualification, examination, and pressure testing.
Technical Details
ASME NM.2 is the ASME code for glass-fiber-reinforced thermosetting-resin (FRP/GRP) pressure piping — the reinforced-plastic companion to the thermoplastic NM.1, drawing material design values from ASME NM.3. It covers the design and construction of FRP systems, including manufacturing method and bonded/laminated joints.
Because FRP is anisotropic and behaves very differently from metals and thermoplastics, its design uses laminate and qualified-stress data rather than isotropic rules. For oil-and-gas GRP specifically, ISO 14692 is the parallel standard.
Engineering Note: Do not design FRP piping with metallic-pipe assumptions — its low axial stiffness, anisotropy, and joint behavior demand FRP-specific stress analysis, support spacing, and expansion provisions per NM.2 (or ISO 14692 for oil and gas).
