Overview

Material requirements for wrought duplex and other stainless steel piping fittings.

2

Scope & Applicability

Applies To Industries

OffshorePetrochemicalChemical Plant

Applies to: Wrought duplex (S31803, S32205, S32750), ferritic, and martensitic stainless steel buttwelding fittings (elbows, tees, reducers) for corrosive service; companion specification to ASTM A790 pipe.

Does NOT cover: Austenitic stainless fittings (use ASTM A403); cast stainless fittings; flanges (refer to ASTM A182 for stainless forgings).

3

Key Requirements

  • Same solution annealing and rapid quench requirement as A790 pipe
  • Corrosion test batch consistency with connected pipe (same test report series)
  • Ferrite content verification per individual order requirement or procurement spec
  • Mechanical properties verified per heat treatment and grade
  • Dimensional compliance with ASME B16.9
4

Technical Details

ASTM A815 is the companion fitting specification to A790 pipe, ensuring fittings and pipe share the same duplex heat treatment discipline. The standard is critical for offshore and chemical piping systems where inconsistent heat treatment between pipe and fittings has historically caused localized inter-granular or pitting corrosion at welds.

Engineering note: When ordering A815 fittings to match A790 pipe, specify the same UNS grade, the same PREN minimum, and if applicable, the same corrosion test batch acceptance requirement. Confirm that fitting manufacturer's solution anneal furnace records and ASTM G48 test results are available before installing fittings in sour or chloride-rich service.

Engineering Notes

Use the product form, grade, class, test method, and acceptance criteria specified by the governing construction code and purchase specification.
