Applies to: Wrought HSLA steel buttwelding fittings (elbows, tees, reducers) for pipeline construction using API 5L X42–X80 pipe; WPHY grades directly correspond to API 5L pipe grades; onshore and offshore pipeline systems.
Does NOT cover: Standard carbon steel fittings for process piping (use ASTM A234); non-pipeline HSLA service; forged fittings (use MSS SP-75 for pipeline flanges/fittings).

Technical Details
ASTM A860 provides fittings for high-strength pipeline construction where standard A234 WPB fittings (36 ksi yield) would be severely undermatched against X60–X80 pipe. The WPHY grade designation mirrors API 5L nomenclature (e.g., WPHY70 = X70 yield strength equivalent), simplifying specification writing for pipeline projects.
Engineering note: Notch toughness requirements in A860 address brittle fracture risk in cold-climate pipeline construction — always specify the CVN test temperature equal to or below the minimum design temperature. For Arctic service, consider supplementary requirements for enhanced low-temperature toughness.
