Overview
MSS SP-75 specifies requirements for high-strength (high-test) wrought butt-welding fittings. These massive fittings are explicitly engineered to match the mechanical properties of high-yield-strength line pipes (such as API 5L X-grades) used in long-distance, high-pressure oil and gas pipelines.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:
- Standard yield carbon steel process fittings (e.g., ASTM A234 WPB) → ASME B16.9.
Key Requirements
SP-75 demands rigorous material testing and quality control far beyond standard B16.9 requirements:
- Mechanical Properties — The fitting material must achieve exceptionally high yield strengths (e.g., 60,000 psi for WPHY-60) through complex quenching and tempering heat treatments, all without sacrificing weldability in the field.
- Testing (Charpy & Proof) — Requires extensive non-destructive examination (100% RT or UT on welds), mathematical proof design, and strict notch-toughness (Charpy V-notch) testing to ensure the fittings can withstand pipeline ground movements, thermal expansion, and extreme operating pressures without catastrophic brittle fracture.
Technical Details
A pipeline engineer cannot weld a standard B16.9 (A234 WPB) elbow into an API 5L X60 pipeline. Because the line pipe is made of high-yield-strength steel, its wall thickness is relatively thin compared to its pressure rating. The standard B16.9 fitting would burst under the pipeline's pressure unless it was made absurdly thick, which would cause massive welding problems.
MSS SP-75 provides the specification for "WPHY" (Wrought Pipe High Yield) fittings that perfectly match the metallurgical profile, high strength, and relative wall thickness of modern line pipes, ensuring uniform strength across the entire pipeline.
Engineering Notes
Fittings manufactured to MSS SP-75 are often heavily machined at the bevel ends (creating a tapered transition) to perfectly match the thinner wall of the high-strength line pipe, while retaining a thicker central body to easily pass burst proof testing without complex finite element analysis.
