Overview

Composition bronze (ounce metal, C83600) castings for valve bodies, fittings, and general-service low-pressure components.

2

Scope & Applicability

Applies To Industries

General IndustryWaterworks

Covers — composition bronze (ounce metal, primarily alloy C83600, 85Cu-5Sn-5Pb-5Zn) sand castings for valve bodies, fittings, and pressure-containing components in general low-pressure service.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Steel/alloy castings → ASTM A216 / A217 / A351.
  • Bronze valve design/ratings → MSS SP-80.
  • Higher-strength or dezincification-resistant bronzes → other ASTM B-series alloys.

B62 is the material behind small bronze valves; the valve rating and construction come from MSS SP-80.

3

Key Requirements

B62 sets minimum requirements for the bronze casting:

  • Chemistry — composition-bronze limits (Cu-Sn-Pb-Zn) for alloy C83600.
  • Mechanical Properties — minimum tensile/yield and elongation.
  • Soundness — casting quality suited to pressure-containing service.
  • Testing — tension testing and, where specified, pressure/soundness checks.

Technical Details

ASTM B62 specifies composition bronze (ounce metal, alloy C83600) castings — the everyday material for small bronze valve bodies and fittings in water and general low-pressure service. It offers good machinability and corrosion resistance at modest cost.

It is the material behind MSS SP-80 bronze valves; the valve's ratings and construction come from that product standard. B62's modest strength and steep temperature derating keep it in mild, low-pressure applications.

Engineering Note: Bronze loses allowable pressure quickly with temperature — verify the derated rating at service temperature rather than the nominal cold-water class.

Engineering Notes

The common bronze (85-5-5-5, alloy C83600) casting for small valve bodies and fittings — the material behind MSS SP-80 bronze valves. Good machinability and corrosion resistance in water and general service, but low strength and a steep temperature derating limit it to mild, low-pressure duty.
