Applies to: Quantitative corrosion screening of insulation aqueous extract solutions against carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and zinc coupons; useful for comparing CUI risk between insulation products; complements ASTM C692's pass/fail SCC test with a quantitative corrosion rate measurement.

Does NOT cover: SCC qualification (use ASTM C692); in-service CUI rate prediction; mechanical performance of insulation; fire-protection insulation systems.

Technical Details

ASTM C1617 provides the quantitative corrosion screening that C692's binary SCC test cannot. By measuring extraction solution chemistry (pH, conductivity, chloride) alongside metal mass loss, it enables comparative evaluation of competing insulation products for CUI risk management programs. High chloride content or low pH in the leachate directly correlates to CUI risk in service.

Engineering note: CUI risk management programs in refineries and chemical plants increasingly use ASTM C1617 data alongside ASTM C692 results to rank insulation products by corrosion aggressiveness. When procuring replacement insulation for carbon steel piping in CUI-susceptible temperature zones (−4 °C to 175 °C), request C1617 test data from the insulation manufacturer to supplement the C795/C692 SCC compliance documentation.
