Does NOT cover: CPVC or elevated-temperature service above 140 °F (use ASTM F439); Schedule 80 PVC fittings (ASTM D2467); threaded PVC fittings; non-pressure drainage fittings (ASTM D3311).

Technical Details
ASTM D2466 Schedule 40 PVC socket fittings are ubiquitous in water treatment, irrigation, and building services. They rely on solvent-cement joining (ASTM D2564) which creates a chemical weld bond through partial dissolution of both PVC surfaces — properly made solvent-cement joints are stronger than the fitting body itself.
Engineering note: Engineers must match fitting schedule to pipe schedule — a Schedule 80 pipe inserted into a Schedule 40 socket creates a wall-thickness mismatch that undermines socket engagement and weakens the joint. For temperatures above 100 °F (38 °C) or chemical service, apply the published PVC temperature derating factor (approximately 50% pressure reduction at 140 °F) and verify the chemical compatibility of PVC against the specific process fluid before specifying.
