Covers — welded (straight or spiral seam) and seamless steel water pipe, 6 in. and larger, for transmission and distribution of potable/raw/reclaimed water and wastewater; the steel cylinder and its fabrication.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Steel flanges/fittings for water → AWWA C207 / C208; cement-mortar lining → AWWA C205.
  • Ductile-iron water pipe → AWWA C151; PE water pipe → AWWA C906.
  • Process steel pipe → ASME B36.10 / ASTM A106 (different design basis).

C200 is the water-industry steel cylinder standard; its linings, coatings, and fittings are separate AWWA standards.

Key Requirements

C200 sets minimum requirements for steel water pipe:

  • Material & Fabrication — steel grades and welded (straight/spiral) or seamless manufacture.
  • Dimensions — diameter/wall for the design pressure and external loads.
  • Testing — weld NDE and hydrostatic/pressure testing.
  • Interfaces — provisions for lining/coating (applied separately) and jointing.

Technical Details

AWWA C200 covers large-diameter steel water pipe (6 in. and larger), fabricated by straight- or spiral-seam welding or seamless. It is the basis for major water transmission mains and aqueducts, where high pressure and large diameter favor welded steel.

The standard defines the steel cylinder; interior lining (cement mortar C205), exterior coating, and steel flanges/fittings (C207/C208) are separate AWWA standards applied to complete the system. Thin-wall, large-diameter pipe demands careful handling and installation to control ovality and buckling.

Engineering Note: For large-diameter C200 pipe, coordinate the lining/coating and handling early — thin-wall steel cylinders can deform (ovalize) during transport and laying, damaging cement-mortar linings before the line is even in service.

It defines the steel cylinder; linings (cement mortar C205 or others) and coatings are applied separately, and flanges/fittings come from AWWA C207/C208.
