Covers — specification and qualification of welding procedures by welding procedure test. Multi-part; Part 1 addresses arc and gas welding of steels and nickel alloys, defining test welds, examinations, and the range of qualification.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Welder performance qualification → ISO 9606.
  • ASME-code procedure qualification → ASME Section IX.
  • Structural steel connection design → EN 1090 / AWS D1.1.

ISO 15614 qualifies the procedure in the EN/PED world, as Section IX does in the ASME world — they are not interchangeable.

Key Requirements

ISO 15614 sets minimum requirements for procedure qualification:

  • pWPS & WPS — a preliminary WPS is drafted, then confirmed as a WPS after the test.
  • Procedure Test — a qualification test weld with defined destructive and non-destructive examinations (tensile, bend, macro, hardness, impact as required).
  • Range of Qualification — thickness, diameter, material group, and process ranges qualified by one test.
  • Essential Variables — changes beyond the ranges require a new procedure test.

Technical Details

ISO 15614 is the European/ISO standard for qualifying welding procedures by procedure test — the WPQR-based counterpart of ASME Section IX. A preliminary WPS is proven by a test weld with mechanical and NDE examinations, which then fixes the range of qualification (thickness, diameter, material group).

It is used on EN 13480 and PED-regulated work, paired with ISO 9606 for welder qualification. Because the essential variables and qualification ranges differ from ASME, an ASME PQR does not automatically transfer to ISO 15614.

Engineering Note: On EU/PED projects, do not assume an existing ASME Section IX PQR qualifies the joint — confirm whether the governing code requires ISO 15614 qualification instead.

Engineering Notes

The ISO/European counterpart of ASME Section IX procedure qualification, used with EN 13480 / PED work. The output is a WPQR (Welding Procedure Qualification Record) supporting a WPS. Ranges of qualification, essential variables, and test details differ from Section IX, so an ASME PQR does not automatically satisfy ISO 15614 and vice versa — the qualification basis must match the governing code.
