Overview
Welder performance qualification testing (the ISO/European system). Part 1 covers fusion welding of steels.
Scope & Applicability
Applies To Industries
Covers — qualification testing of welders for fusion welding by test piece, defining ranges of approval (process, material group, thickness, diameter, welding position) and certificate validity/revalidation. Part 1 addresses steels (companion parts cover aluminium, nickel, copper, titanium).
Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:
- Welding procedure qualification → ISO 15614.
- ASME-code welder qualification → ASME Section IX (QW-300).
- Welding operators of mechanized/automatic equipment → ISO 14732.
ISO 9606 qualifies the person; ISO 15614 qualifies the procedure they follow.
Key Requirements
ISO 9606 sets minimum requirements for welder qualification:
- Test Piece — welding a specified coupon by process, material group, position, and thickness/diameter.
- Examination — visual plus bend/fracture or radiographic testing to acceptance limits.
- Range of Approval — the span of production welding a single test qualifies.
- Validity — certificate validity period with defined conditions for prolongation/revalidation.
Technical Details
ISO 9606 is the European/ISO standard for qualifying welder performance by test. A welder welds a defined test coupon that, on passing visual and bend/radiographic examination, qualifies a range of production welding — process, material group, thickness, diameter, and position.
It is the personnel companion to ISO 15614 (procedures) and the ISO equivalent of ASME Section IX's welder qualification. Its validity and revalidation rules differ from ASME, which affects welder-continuity management on EN/PED projects.
Engineering Note: Track ISO 9606 certificate validity and the prolongation conditions — an expired or improperly maintained welder qualification can invalidate otherwise-good production welds at audit.
Engineering Notes
The ISO/European welder performance qualification standard — the personnel counterpart to ISO 15614 (procedures) and the ASME Section IX QW-300 welder qualification. It defines the test pieces, ranges of approval (material, thickness, diameter, position), and validity/revalidation rules. Its certificate validity and prolongation rules differ from ASME, which matters for workforce management on EN/PED sites.
