Overview
Dimensions for metric hexagon head bolts (partially threaded), product grades A and B.
Scope & Applicability
Applies To Industries
Covers — dimensions of metric hexagon head bolts with a partially threaded shank, product grades A and B, including head size, shank/thread lengths, and tolerances.
Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:
- Fully threaded hex screws → ISO 4017.
- Bolt mechanical properties → ISO 898-1.
- Nut dimensions → ISO 4032; inch-series bolts → ASME B18.2.1.
ISO 4014 = partially threaded metric hex bolt; ISO 4017 = fully threaded equivalent.
Key Requirements
ISO 4014 sets minimum requirements for metric hex bolts:
- Dimensions — head width across flats, head height, shank length, and thread length by size.
- Product Grades — A and B tolerance classes.
- Thread — metric coarse (and fine, where specified) with a plain shank under the head.
Technical Details
ISO 4014 is the dimensional standard for partially threaded metric hexagon head bolts — the ISO counterpart of ASME B18.2.1. It defines head size, shank and thread lengths, and tolerances, with a plain shank under the head that distinguishes it from the fully threaded ISO 4017 screw.
Geometry only: the bolt's strength is set by its ISO 898-1 property class, and nuts come from ISO 4032. Partially threaded bolts are chosen where the unthreaded shank should bear shear load across a joint.
Engineering Note: Use ISO 4014 (partially threaded) where the shank must take shear in the joint, and ISO 4017 (fully threaded) where thread engagement to the head is needed — the two are not always interchangeable.
Engineering Notes
The metric hex head bolt dimensional standard — the ISO counterpart of ASME B18.2.1. It defines partially threaded bolts (a plain shank under the head), distinct from the fully threaded ISO 4017 screws. Size and head geometry are here; strength is the ISO 898 property class. Partially threaded bolts are preferred in shear/bearing joints where the shank should carry the load.
