Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Partially threaded hex bolts → ISO 4014.
  • Screw mechanical properties → ISO 898-1.
  • Nut dimensions → ISO 4032; inch-series screws → ASME B18.2.1.

ISO 4017 = fully threaded metric hex screw; use ISO 4014 where a plain shank is needed.

Key Requirements

ISO 4017 sets minimum requirements for fully threaded metric screws:

  • Dimensions — head width across flats, head height, and full thread length by size.
  • Product Grades — A and B tolerance classes.
  • Thread — metric coarse (and fine, where specified) running to the head.

Technical Details

ISO 4017 is the dimensional standard for fully threaded metric hexagon head screws — the fully threaded companion to ISO 4014. Threaded all the way to the head, it suits tapped-hole applications and joints needing full thread engagement rather than a load-bearing plain shank.

Like the other dimensional fastener standards, it fixes geometry only; strength comes from ISO 898-1 and mating nuts from ISO 4032. The fully-vs-partially threaded choice affects how a bolted joint carries shear.

Engineering Note: Prefer ISO 4017 (fully threaded) for screwing into tapped components; for shear/bearing joints across clearance holes, a partially threaded ISO 4014 bolt keeps threads out of the shear plane.
