Overview
JIS G3459 specifies stainless steel pipes, known as SUS-TP, used for corrosion resistance, low temperature, and high-temperature service. It is the Japanese counterpart to ASTM A312.
Scope & Applicability
Applies To Industries
Covers — austenitic stainless steel pipe:
- Common grades: SUS304TP, SUS316TP, SUS304LTP, SUS316LTP.
- Both seamless and welded manufacturing.
Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:
- Large diameter welded stainless pipe → JIS G3468.
Key Requirements
SUS-TP relies on strict chemical control and heat treatment:
- Solution annealing is required to dissolve carbides and maximize corrosion resistance.
- Welded pipes must not use filler metal.
Technical Details
JIS G3459 utilizes the "S" schedule system (e.g., Sch 10S, 40S) identical to ASME B36.19M, allowing lighter, cost-effective walls for expensive stainless alloys.
Engineering Notes
The "L" appended to the grade (e.g., SUS316LTP) denotes low carbon content, which is essential to prevent intergranular corrosion when the pipe is welded.
