Covers — round-opening metal ball valves (full, regular, and reduced port) with threaded, socket-welding, solder-joint, grooved, and flared ends, in carbon steel, alloy/stainless steel, iron, and copper alloys.
Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:
- Flanged / butt-welding end ball valves → MSS SP-72.
- Process/petroleum-grade metal ball valves → API 608.
- Ratings and wall thickness basis → ASME B16.34; test detail → API 598 / MSS SP-61.
SP-110 is the standard for small-bore threaded and socket-weld ball valves used for isolation and instrument service.
Key Requirements
SP-110 sets minimum requirements for small-bore ball valves:
- Design — body construction, port type, and end connections (threaded, socket-weld, solder, grooved, flared).
- Materials — carbon/alloy/stainless steel, iron, and copper-alloy bodies with defined trim.
- Testing — shell and seat pressure testing to defined acceptance leakage.
Technical Details
MSS SP-110 covers small-bore metal ball valves with threaded, socket-weld, solder, grooved, and flared ends — the workhorse isolation and instrument-root valve. It sets the design, materials, port options, and shell/seat testing.
For flanged or butt-weld ends, MSS SP-72 applies; for petroleum/process-grade valves, API 608 is used. Ratings still derive from ASME B16.34.
Engineering Note: For instrument isolation, a soft-seated SP-110 ball valve gives bubble-tight shutoff, but confirm the seat material's temperature limit against the process.
