ASTM D3359

Covers — tape test methods for assessing coating adhesion: Method A (X-cut, for thicker/field coatings) and Method B (cross-hatch lattice, for thinner coatings), with a classification scale for coating removal.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

• Quantitative pull-off adhesion (MPa/psi) → ASTM D4541.
• Paint-system selection and durability → ISO 12944.
• Coating thickness measurement → other ASTM/SSPC methods.

D3359 gives a quick qualitative rating; D4541 gives a numeric adhesion strength.

D3359 sets minimum requirements for the tape test:

• Cutting — X-cut (Method A) or lattice cross-cut (Method B) fully through the coating.
• Tape Application/Removal — standardized pressure-sensitive tape applied and removed.
• Rating — classify coating removed (e.g., 5A/5B best to 0A/0B worst).
• Reporting — method, rating, substrate, and coating details.

ASTM D3359 is the tape test for coating adhesion — a quick, inexpensive pass/fail check used widely in the field and lab. A cut is made through the coating (an X for thick coatings, a cross-hatch lattice for thinner ones), tape is applied and pulled, and the amount of coating lifted is rated on a defined scale.

It is qualitative: it tells you whether adhesion is acceptable, not how strong it is. For a numeric adhesion strength, ASTM D4541 pull-off testing is used. ISO 12944 coating inspections commonly cite D3359 for adhesion verification.

Engineering Note: Use D3359 as a fast screen and D4541 when a specification demands a numeric adhesion value — a good D3359 rating confirms the coating is stuck, but only D4541 quantifies how well.
