Covers — corrosion protection of steel by protective paint systems: atmospheric-corrosivity categories (C1–CX) and water/soil immersion (Im), surface preparation grades, design for coating, paint-system selection, durability ranges, and laboratory/field performance testing (issued in parts 1–9).

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Hot-dip galvanizing → ASTM A123 / A153 (and ISO 1461).
  • Pipeline external coatings (FBE, 3LPE) → the applicable pipeline coating standards.
  • Coating adhesion test methods → ASTM D3359 / D4541 (ISO 4624/2409).

ISO 12944 selects and qualifies the paint system by corrosivity and required durability; test methods verify the applied coating.

Key Requirements

ISO 12944 sets minimum requirements for a paint specification:

  • Corrosivity Category — classify the environment (C1–CX atmospheric; Im1–Im4 immersion).
  • Surface Preparation — required cleanliness grade (e.g., Sa 2½ per ISO 8501-1) and profile.
  • Paint System — primer/intermediate/topcoat build (generic type and DFT) for the category.
  • Durability — expected life range (Low/Medium/High/Very High) and qualification testing.

Technical Details

ISO 12944 is the master standard for specifying protective paint systems on steel. Its corrosivity categories (C1 rural through CX offshore/industrial, plus Im immersion) and durability ranges let a specification compress the entire scheme into a defensible callout, e.g., "category C5, Very High durability."

Crucially, it ties coating life to surface preparation cleanliness (ISO 8501) and coating build (DFT). Because inadequate surface prep is the dominant cause of premature coating failure, the standard's prep grades are as important as the paint choice. Adhesion is verified by test methods such as ASTM D3359/D4541.

Engineering Note: Specify and inspect surface preparation as rigorously as the paint — an excellent paint system over poorly prepared steel will still fail early, and no amount of topcoat fixes a bad substrate.

Surface preparation (linked to ISO 8501 cleanliness) is the single biggest driver of coating life — most premature failures trace to inadequate prep, not the paint itself.
