Covers — CPVC plastic pressure pipe in Schedules 40 and 80 (IPS dimensions), pressure-rated for water and suited to hot corrosive liquid service (to ~200 °F), with material, dimensions, and pressure ratings.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Standard-temperature PVC pipe → ASTM D1785.
  • CPVC fittings → ASTM F439 (socket) / F438.
  • Compressed air/gas service → not permitted (safety).

CPVC and PVC look alike but use different materials and cements — never mix CPVC and PVC components or solvent cements.

Key Requirements

F441 sets minimum requirements for CPVC pipe:

  • Material — CPVC cell classification for elevated-temperature service.
  • Dimensions — IPS OD with Schedule 40/80 walls.
  • Pressure Rating — by size/schedule at 73 °F with temperature derating up to ~200 °F.
  • Testing & Marking — burst/sustained pressure and CPVC product marking.

Technical Details

ASTM F441 covers CPVC pressure pipe (Schedules 40 and 80), extending PVC-style plastic piping to higher temperatures — around 200 °F — for hot corrosive chemical service and hot-water distribution where standard PVC would soften and fail.

CPVC uses the same IPS schedule dimensions as PVC (D1785), so the pipes look almost identical, but the materials, fittings (F439), and solvent cements are not interchangeable. Mixing PVC and CPVC components or cements produces unreliable joints.

Engineering Note: Never join CPVC with PVC cement or PVC fittings — use CPVC-specific cement and F439 fittings, and still apply the temperature-derating factor, since even CPVC loses significant pressure capacity as it approaches its 200 °F limit.

Engineering Notes

CPVC extends PVC-style plastic piping to higher temperatures — up to about 200 °F — making it suitable for hot corrosive chemical service and hot-water distribution where PVC would soften. Dimensioned to the same IPS schedules as PVC (D1785) so it looks similar, but the materials and solvent cements are NOT interchangeable; CPVC fittings (F439) and CPVC cement must be used. Verify chemical compatibility.
