Applies to: Polyethylene pressure pipe and tubing ½ in. through 3 in. IPS (Iron Pipe Size) and CTS (Copper Tube Size) for cold potable water service and service connections at temperatures to 140 °F (60 °C).

Does NOT cover: PE gas distribution pipe (ASTM D2513); larger diameter PE water mains (AWWA C906 covers NPS 4–63); HDPE for industrial or non-potable service without NSF 61 certification.

Key Requirements

  • PE 3408 or PE 4710 compound (higher density/strength resin classification)
  • Pressure rating via Standard Dimension Ratio (SDR): e.g., SDR 9 = 200 psi for PE 4710
  • NSF 61 certification for potable water contact

  • UV stabilization (carbon black ≥2% for outdoor installation)

Technical Details

AWWA C901 governs small-diameter polyethylene water service piping from the water main to the meter. Its SDR-based pressure rating system simplifies design across varying pressure zones — SDR 9 for high-pressure zones (200 psi for PE 4710), SDR 11 for standard zones (160 psi), SDR 13.5 for low-pressure service (130 psi). Contractors widely use AWWA C901 pipe for service line replacements under lead pipe remediation programs.

Engineering note: Ensure the PE compound grade (PE 3408 vs PE 4710) is explicitly specified on the purchase order — the same physical pipe can be produced from either compound, but PE 4710 offers higher pressure rating and better slow-crack-growth resistance. For directional drilling under roads, specify PE 4710 SDR 11 minimum to handle installation loads.
