Waterworks integration — because C906 sits in the AWWA family, specify it alongside the related standards: main disinfection to AWWA C651, and confirm restraint at transitions to gasketed/mechanical-joint pipe. Products must meet potable-water health-effects certification (e.g., NSF/ANSI 61).

Pressure class & surge — C906 rates pipe by Pressure Class (working pressure) and separately defines allowable recurring and occasional surge pressures above the PC — important for pump-station and transient (water-hammer) design.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Small-diameter PE service tubing → AWWA C901.
  • The ISO PN/SDR framework → ISO 4427; general US OD/DR PE → ASTM D3035 / F714.
  • Ductile-iron/steel water pipe → AWWA C151 / C200.

C906 is the waterworks-family PE pressure pipe standard for larger potable-water mains.

  • Surge allowance — defined recurring and occasional surge pressures the pipe may tolerate above its PC.
  • Fittings & Jointing — molded/fabricated fittings and butt/electrofusion (per ASTM F2620) suitability; fully restrained joints.

C906 rates pipe by Pressure Class (PC) — the working pressure — derived from the material HDS and DR (PC = 2 · HDS / (DR − 1); PE4710 HDS ≈ 1000 psi at 73 °F):

Working pressure for water at 73 °F. C906 additionally allows short-term surge above the PC (recurring and occasional). Verify against the current C906 tables and edition.

Why PE for waterworks

Its fusion-welded joints create a continuous, leak-free, fully restrained pipeline — advantageous for buried mains and trenchless (HDD/sliplining) installation, and it resists corrosion and tuberculation. Small-diameter service tubing is covered by the companion AWWA C901; main disinfection follows AWWA C651.

Engineering Note: Because C906 PE joints are fully restrained by fusion, thrust blocks needed for gasketed (bell-and-spigot) pipe are generally not required — but confirm restraint at transitions to gasketed or mechanical-joint pipe, and include the C906 surge allowance in transient/water-hammer checks.
