Overview
JIS G3452 specifies carbon steel pipes, commonly referred to as SGP, used for the piping of steam, water, oil, gas, and air at relatively low pressures. It is the Japanese equivalent to ASTM A53 for ordinary building and utility services.
Scope & Applicability
Applies To Industries
Covers — low-pressure utility piping:
- Pipe size from 15A to 500A (approx. 1/2" to 20").
- Suitable for maximum working pressures up to approx 1 MPa (150 psi).
Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:
- Pressure service above 1 MPa or high temperatures → JIS G3454 (STPG).
Key Requirements
SGP is the most basic pipe in the JIS system:
- Extremely permissive chemical composition (only limits P and S).
- Low tensile strength requirement (min 290 MPa / 42 ksi).
Technical Details
SGP pipes are typically ERW (welded) and come in black (uncoated) or galvanized (zinc-coated) finishes. SGP has NO schedule system; it uses a single standard wall thickness for each size.
Engineering Notes
Never use SGP for hazardous process fluids or high-pressure steam. Its lack of stringent quality controls and absence of a schedule system makes it strictly a utility pipe.
