Overview

JIS G3454 specifies carbon steel pipes, known as STPG, used for pressure service at an approximate maximum temperature of 350°C. It serves a similar role in Japanese engineering as ASTM A106 does globally.

Scope & Applicability

Applies To Industries

General IndustryPower PlantPetrochemical

Covers — carbon steel pressure pipe:

  • Grades STPG 370 and STPG 410.
  • Working temperatures up to 350°C (660°F).
  • Uses the Schedule system for wall thickness (Sch 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80).

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • High-temperature service (>350°C) → JIS G3456 (STPT).
  • High-pressure service → JIS G3455 (STS).
3

Key Requirements

STPG provides reliability for process and power applications:

  • Materials — allows both seamless and ERW manufacturing.
  • Testing — requires hydrostatic or NDE testing to guarantee pressure retention.
4

Technical Details

Unlike SGP, STPG utilizes the Schedule numbering system, allowing engineers to select appropriate wall thicknesses for various pressure applications in standard plant systems.

5

Engineering Notes

While similar to A106, STPG allows ERW (welded) manufacturing, whereas A106 is strictly seamless. If seamless is required, specify STPG-S.
