Overview
PE plastic pressure pipe dimensioned by controlled outside diameter and dimension ratio (DR), published by ASTM International. It covers the smaller- and mid-diameter range of the North American OD/DR PE system (its large-diameter companion is ASTM F714) for water service, municipal utilities, and general pressurized liquids, using US PE material designation codes (e.g., PE4710) and the IPS/DIPS OD systems.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:
- Large-diameter OD-based PE pipe → ASTM F714 (D3035 and F714 overlap in the mid range; confirm the exact size band in the current editions).
- US waterworks/AWWA-qualified PE → AWWA C906.
- The ISO PN/SDR framework → ISO 4427; Thai HDPE → TIS 982-2556.
- PE fittings and fusion procedures → separate ASTM/PPI standards (e.g., ASTM F2620 for fusion).
D3035 and F714 are the small- and large-diameter halves of the US OD/DR-based PE system.
Key Requirements
D3035 sets minimum requirements for OD-based PE pipe:
- Material — PE compounds by four-digit designation code (e.g., PE4710): density cell, slow-crack-growth resistance, and HDB, per ASTM D3350 / PPI TR-4 listing.
- Dimensions — controlled OD (IPS or DIPS system) and wall thickness by DR, with OD, wall, and ovality tolerances.
- Pressure Rating — PR computed from HDS (= HDB × design factor) and DR at 73 °F, with temperature derating above that.
- Testing — sustained-pressure, quick-burst, and elevated-temperature tests; slow-crack-growth (e.g., PENT) and workmanship/marking checks.
Technical Details
ASTM D3035 is the North American standard for PE pressure pipe based on controlled outside diameter, covering the smaller diameters (its large-diameter companion is F714). Pressure rating comes from the dimension ratio (DR = OD/wall) and the material's hydrostatic design basis (HDB), using US material designation codes such as PE4710.
How US OD/DR pipe is rated
The pressure rating (PR) is calculated from the material's hydrostatic design stress (HDS) and the dimension ratio:
PR = 2 · HDS / (DR − 1), where HDS = HDB × design factor (DF); for water at 73 °F, PE4710 gives HDS ≈ 1000 psi (HDB 1600 psi × DF 0.63).
A lower DR (thicker wall) gives a higher PR. Typical PE4710 ratings (water, 73 °F):

PR in psi for water at 73 °F. Older PE3608/PE3408 pipe rates lower (HDS ≈ 800 psi). Confirm against the current material listing.
OD system & material code
D3035 pipe is made to IPS (iron pipe size) or DIPS (ductile-iron pipe size) OD systems — two pipes of the same DR but different OD systems are dimensionally different, which matters for fittings and fusion. The PE code (e.g., PE4710 = "PE" + density/slow-crack cell + HDB) defines the compound.
Temperature
Ratings assume water at 73 °F (23 °C) and must be derated at higher temperatures using the PPI/manufacturer service-temperature factors. Joining is by butt fusion and electrofusion (same as ISO PE).
The OD/DR system must not be confused with the ISO PN/SDR framework even though the underlying physics is the same.
Engineering Note: Confirm the OD sizing system (IPS vs DIPS) and the material code along with the DR — a PE4710 DR11 in IPS is dimensionally different from a DIPS pipe of the same DR, which matters for fittings and fusion.
