Overview

Large-diameter PE plastic pressure pipe based on outside diameter and DR, published by ASTM International. It is the big-bore companion to ASTM D3035 (smaller sizes), covering pipe for potable and raw water, municipal and industrial sewage, process liquids, effluents, and slurries — including trenchless insertion (sliplining) renewal of deteriorated pipelines. It uses US PE material designation codes (e.g., PE4710) and the IPS/DIPS OD systems.

Scope & Applicability

Applies To Industries

WaterworksMunicipalPipelineWater Treatment

Covers — large-diameter PE plastic pressure pipe based on outside diameter and DR for water, municipal/domestic sewage, industrial process liquids, effluents, and slurries, including insertion renewal of old piping.

Typical use — buried and above-ground transmission mains, force mains, intake/outfall lines, mine and dredge slurry lines, and sliplining of failing pipelines. Joints are butt/electrofusion (per ASTM F2620), giving a continuous restrained line well suited to trenchless and directional-drilling installation.

Design caution — for large thin-wall (high-DR) pipe, external/collapse loads (vacuum, groundwater, burial, sliplining annulus grouting) often govern over internal pressure; check ring/buckling capacity, not just PR.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Smaller-diameter OD/DR PE pipe → ASTM D3035; US waterworks PE → AWWA C906.
  • ISO PN/SDR PE framework → ISO 4427; Thai HDPE → TIS 982-2556.
  • PE fittings and fusion procedures → separate ASTM/PPI standards (e.g., ASTM F2620).

F714 handles the large end of the US OD/DR PE range; D3035 the smaller sizes.

Key Requirements

F714 sets minimum requirements for large-diameter OD-based PE pipe:

  • Material — PE compounds by four-digit designation code (e.g., PE4710) and hydrostatic design basis, per ASTM D3350 / PPI TR-4 listing.
  • Dimensions — outside diameter (IPS or DIPS) and wall by DR across the large-size range, with wall, OD, and ovality/out-of-roundness tolerances that matter for fusion and re-rounding.
  • Pressure Rating — PR from HDS (= HDB × DF) and DR, referenced to water at 73 °F, with temperature derating.
  • Testing — sustained-pressure, quick-burst, elevated-temperature and slow-crack-growth (PENT) tests, plus workmanship and marking for large-diameter production.

Technical Details

ASTM F714 covers large-diameter PE pressure pipe based on outside diameter — the big-bore companion to D3035. It serves water and sewage transmission, industrial process liquids, effluents, and slurries, and is widely used for trenchless insertion (sliplining) renewal of aging pipelines.

Pressure rating (same basis as D3035)

Rating uses the material's hydrostatic design stress (HDS) and the dimension ratio: PR = 2 · HDS / (DR − 1) (PE4710: HDS ≈ 1000 psi for water at 73 °F). Typical PE4710 values:

DRPressure Rating (PE4710)
21100 psi
17125 psi
13.5160 psi
11200 psi
9250 psi
7.3333 psi

PR in psi, water at 73 °F. The only real difference from D3035 is the diameter range. Confirm against the current material listing.

Large-diameter design & handling

  • Collapse governs, not just pressure — for high-DR (thin-wall) large pipe, external loads (vacuum/surge, groundwater, burial, sliplining grout pressure) can control; check ring-buckling / collapse resistance.
  • Ovality — large pipe can go out-of-round in storage/handling; it may need re-rounding clamps before butt fusion.
  • Jointing/installation — butt fusion (large McElroy-type machines) and electrofusion per ASTM F2620 give a continuous, restrained, leak-free line ideal for HDD and sliplining.

PE's ductility, corrosion resistance, and fully fused joints make it a strong choice for buried and slurry service.

Engineering Note: For slurry and buried transmission, exploit PE's fused-joint continuity and impact toughness — but confirm the DR gives adequate collapse resistance for external/vacuum and burial loads, not just internal pressure.

Engineering Notes

The large-diameter counterpart of D3035 for OD-based PE pressure pipe — used for water and sewage transmission, industrial process liquids, effluents, and slurries, including trenchless/insertion renewal of old pipes. Same DR/HDB rating logic and PE material codes; the distinction from D3035 is size range. PE's toughness and fusion-welded joints make it attractive for slurry and buried service.
