Covers — centrifugally cast ductile-iron pipe, 3–64 in., for potable/raw/reclaimed water and wastewater, with push-on and mechanical-joint ends, by pressure/thickness class.

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • Thickness/pressure design method → AWWA C150; fittings → AWWA C110 / C153.
  • Joints/gaskets → AWWA C111; cement lining → AWWA C104; PE encasement → AWWA C105.
  • Steel or PE water pipe → AWWA C200 / C906.

C151 supplies the pipe; C150 supplies the thickness-design methodology behind its class selection.

Key Requirements

C151 sets minimum requirements for ductile-iron pipe:

  • Material — ductile (nodular) iron with specified strength and elongation.
  • Thickness Class — wall by pressure/thickness class (design per C150).
  • Ends & Lining — push-on/MJ ends and cement-mortar lining.
  • Testing — hydrostatic proof test of each pipe, plus dimensional and material checks.

Technical Details

AWWA C151 covers centrifugally cast ductile-iron pipe, 3–64 in., the mainstay of buried water and wastewater mains. Ductile iron's strength and toughness give long service life, and push-on and mechanical joints make installation fast for buried lines.

Wall thickness is chosen by pressure/thickness class using the design method in the companion AWWA C150. Interior cement-mortar lining (C104) prevents tuberculation, and in aggressive soils polyethylene encasement (C105) protects the exterior. Fittings are C110/C153.

Engineering Note: Select the thickness class using C150 for the actual internal pressure plus external (earth/traffic) loads, and protect against soil corrosivity — buried ductile iron in aggressive soil without PE encasement (C105) can suffer external pitting despite adequate wall.

Engineering Notes

The workhorse ductile-iron water main — strong, tough, and long-lived, jointed by push-on or mechanical (MJ) joints for buried service. Wall thickness is selected by pressure/thickness class, with the design methodology in the companion AWWA C150. Interior cement-mortar lining (C104) prevents tuberculation; exterior protection (polyethylene encasement, C105) is used in aggressive soils. Fittings are C110/C153.
