Overview

The Thai national standard for HDPE (PE) pressure pipe, issued by the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI). It covers PE80/PE100 pipe for pressurized water supply, dimensioned by PN and SDR and technically aligned with ISO 4427. It governs the pipe itself; PE fittings, valves, and fusion procedures fall under separate standards.

Scope & Applicability

Applies To Industries

WaterworksGeneral IndustryMunicipalWater Treatment

Covers — HDPE (PE80/PE100) pressure pipe for water supply in the Thai national standards system, dimensioned by PN/SDR and carrying the TIS (มอก.) conformity mark.

Certification status — TIS 982 is applied as a product-conformity standard: pipe is licensed by TISI and marked with the มอก. symbol and a licence number. Even where it is not a legally compulsory standard, the มอก. 982 mark is routinely written into procurement specifications for MWA (การประปานครหลวง), PWA (การประปาส่วนภูมิภาค), municipal, and government waterworks — so in practice it is a purchasing requirement. (Confirm the current compulsory/general status with TISI for your project.)

Does NOT cover (exclusions) — the following are governed elsewhere:

  • The international PE framework it aligns with → ISO 4427.
  • US OD/DR-based PE pipe and waterworks PE → ASTM D3035 / F714 / AWWA C906.
  • PE fittings, valves, and fusion procedures → separate TIS/ISO standards.
  • PVC/CPVC and other plastics → their respective TIS/ASTM standards.

For Thai projects, TIS 982 conformity (มอก. mark) is frequently required in addition to the ISO 4427 technical basis.

Key Requirements

TIS 982 sets minimum requirements for Thai HDPE pipe, mirroring the ISO 4427 test regime:

  • Material — PE80/PE100 compounds classified by minimum required strength (MRS); carbon-black content (≈2–2.5%) and dispersion for black water pipe; oxidation induction time (OIT) for long-term stability.
  • Physical properties — density and melt flow rate (MFR) within grade limits; elongation at break; hydrostatic strength verified by long-term (80 °C) pressure tests.
  • Dimensions & tolerances — outside diameter, wall thickness by SDR, and ovality, with tolerance bands per the OD/PN table.
  • Pressure rating — PN derived from MRS and SDR for water at 20 °C, following the ISO 4427 relationship.
  • Marking — each pipe must be printed with maker, PE grade, OD × wall, PN, SDR, the มอก. 982 number, and a production date/batch code.
  • Certification — TISI product licence and มอก. conformity mark for the Thai market.

Technical Details

TIS 982-2556 is Thailand's national standard for HDPE (PE) pressure pipe, technically aligned with ISO 4427. It carries the same PE80/PE100 material grades and PN/SDR rating logic, adapted into the Thai standards framework and marked with the TIS (มอก.) conformity symbol. (The "2556" is the Buddhist-era year = 2013 CE; confirm whether a newer revision applies to your project.)

Pressure rating (same basis as ISO 4427)

Rating combines the material grade (PE80 → MRS 8.0 MPa, PE100 → MRS 10.0 MPa) with the wall, expressed as SDR = OD ÷ wall, via PN = 20 · MRS / [ C · (SDR − 1) ] (C = 1.25, water at 20 °C):

SDRPE80PE100
21PN 6.3PN 8
17PN 8PN 10
13.6PN 10PN 12.5
11PN 12.5PN 16
9PN 16PN 20
7.4PN 20PN 25

PN in bar, water at 20 °C, 50-year design life. In the Thai market PE100 has largely become the default grade over PE80.

Product form in Thailand

  • Colour/marking — water pipe is typically black with co-extruded blue stripes; each length is printed with the maker, grade, OD × wall, PN, SDR, and มอก. 982 licence number.
  • Supply length — small OD (≈ ≤ 63 mm) is usually supplied in coils; larger OD in straight lengths (commonly 6 or 12 m).
  • Jointing — butt fusion and electrofusion (not adhesive); transitions to flanges via stub end + backing ring.

For Thai waterworks and municipal projects, the มอก. mark is frequently a procurement requirement, so specifying TIS 982 (not only ISO 4427) ensures locally accepted product.

Engineering Note: On Thai projects, confirm the pipe carries a valid มอก. 982 licence number (not just the logo) — the ISO 4427 technical basis is identical, but local acceptance and inspection typically require the TIS certification.

Engineering Notes

The Thai HDPE pipe reference (มอก. 982-2556; the "2556" is the Buddhist-era year, 2013 CE), aligned with ISO 4427. It is the standard cited for waterworks and municipal PE piping in Thailand, and TIS certification (มอก. mark) is often a procurement requirement locally — MWA and PWA specs routinely call for it. On inspection, verify the printed มอก. 982 licence number and confirm the marked grade/PN/SDR match the design; ratings and SDR logic follow the ISO PE framework.
